Who is final authority, asks WAO

6 December 2006, The Sun KUALA LUMPUR: Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) executive director Ivy Josiah says that it is confusing for the layperson that the National Registry Department upheld the Constitutional rights of Rayappan by reinstating his professed faith without referring to the syariah court, a decision which is now challenged by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (JAIS) with the syariah court’s endorsement. Mr. Benjamin Dawson in an interview said that from the increasingly strong rhetoric displayed at recent political gatherings and forums, politicians cannot be expected to uphold Malaysians’ constitutional rights. “Our hope,” he said, “lies in the judiciary.”
