Lawyer divided over assembly’s legitimacy

12 May 2009, New Straits Times KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court’s decision yesterday declaring Datuk Seri Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin to be the rightful Menteri Besar of Perak have left lawyers divided over the legitimacy of last Thursday’s state assembly meeting. Mr. Benjamin Dawson said in an interview “Despite Barisan Nasional having the majority, they cannot remove the Menteri Besar by a mere vote of no-confidence. A Menteri Besar can only be removed if he resigns voluntarily or if the assembly is dissolved. And Nizar is unlikely to resign.”
